Tuesday, November 2, 2004. It marked what was one of the most cryptically haunting nights in my life. It took months to shed the filth of confused betrayal.
The only - let me repeat - ONLY silver lining was that it could not possibly get any worse in 2008. Republicans would not ...no, could not possibly be able to outdo themselves and find yet another nominee so unequivocally offensive in nature. I was right.
The republican base -having acute buyers remorse- pulled back to the center, in essence observing, understanding, and branding the previous eight years of policy a shift too far to the right. Smart.
Enter McCain. When nominated I felt a guarded sigh of relief. However one would soon find out this was no longer the McCain of primary election 2000, now a little less straight talk, now a little less maverick. Still, while I disagree with a large majority of his policy, he's qualified, competent, and quite possibly a formidable opponent. And as bad as it may get, at least it's not Bush, right? ..Right?
Enter Palin. I honestly, in my heart of hearts, did not think it possible in the fabric of any sane reality to find someone so offensively average to sit a heartbeat from the most powerful position on earth.
